Presentation

Throughout the evaluation it is important to create an environment that increases the student’s performance

Tips to create the right atmosphere:

  • Put the student/learner at his/her ease.
  • The student must not be concerned about the outcome of the evaluation.
  • Explain clearly to the student that this is not a test that he/she can fail.
IDevice Icon 1. Silent reading:
  • Test the student on their school grade level, and older students on level 7.
  • Place relevant story upside down in front of student.
  • Explain the following to him/her:
  • When I say begin, turn the page and start reading immediately.
  • Read silently, not aloud.
  • Read the story as quickly as you can but also try to remember what you read.
  • When you have finished reading, I am going to ask you 10 easy questions.  Do not worry, they are easy questions and you will only have to answer "wrong" or "right".
  • Once you have finished reading, look up so that I can see that you are finished and take your time.

  • Before starting to read say the following:
  • When I say start, turn the page over and start reading silently.
  • Read the story quickly.
  • Remember what you have read.
  • Look up immediately once you are finished.

  • Once the student has finished reading the lesson, take it away.
  • Now calmly ask the questions, one by one, without putting emphasis on any part of the question so as not to give the student any indication of the answer, either by emphasis or facial expression.
  • Mark the questions so that the student can not see if it is right or wrong.
  • Complete the appropriate evaluation forms.
  • Remember the grade 1 students do not do silent reading, only loud reading.

IDevice Icon 2. Loud reading:
  • Let the student read the appropriate lesson aloud.
  • Place the relevant lesson upside down in front of student.
  • Tell him/her to turn the page over and to start reading as soon as he/she is ready.
  • He/she must read as quickly as possible but must again remember what he/she is reading.
  • Complete the Diagnostic Reading Report.
  • The tutor has to be familiar with the reading material to be able to pick up any mistakes made by the student.
