Explanation of reading evaluation
During the evaluation reading ability is tested by using the following methods:
- Silent reading: This tests the speed at which the student reads as well as his/her recollection. (See calculation of REL.)
- Use the silent reading evaluation matter which is in accordance with the student’s grade level. Students who have passed Gr.7 read the grade seven reading matter. The procedure as already explained is followed.
- The result is filled in on the Evaluation form. The Diagnostic Reading Report can be used to note any further reading problems.
- Loud reading: This is used to pin point any additional reading problems.
- Use the loud reading evaluation matter which is in accordance with the student’s grade level. The procedure as already explained is used.
- The result is filled in on the Diagnostic Reading Report. Remember: students who have passed Gr.7 do not do the loud reading -, spelling -, word recognition-, sound recognition evaluation.
